I don’t understand why, exactly, they are going the same route of “Charles repressed Jean’s self and now it is rising up with a vengeance” that X3 did when so many people complained about that and how it was handled in X3. It is, to an extent, comics accurate, but there are plenty of ways to tell the Phoenix Saga that don’t involve that, especially since that portion of the story isn’t even in the Dark Phoenix Saga proper and is a supplemental story that one might even call a retcon.
Actually, I do know why they’re doing it; they’re doing it because they cannot allow the story to be Jean’s the way it demands to be. They have to make it about Charles’s mistakes and guilt rather than about Jean’s own relationship with herself, her trauma, and the expectations placed on her. Why tell a story about a woman when you can tell one about a man?
